Buzzword Basics

Basic Buzzwords

Management speak inspired Scott Adams to create the Dilbert ® series cartoons.

The illusion of communication refers to people participating in endless meetings with no outcome, understanding whatever they choose, communicating in fuzzy management speak. To prove that the illusion is real, we developed the basic buzzword challenge.

Consider the following concepts, in random sequence, regularly heard in meetings or used by a suit delivering an inspirational talk:

  • Benefits
  • Values
  • Activities
  • Objectives
  • Mission
  • Synergy
  • Vision
  • Tactics
  • Deliverables
  • Strategy
  • Goals
  • Result
  • Resources
  • People
  • Effects.

There exists a unique sequence where each concept defines the next, forming a logical progression. Ask yourself, does mission define the vision, i.e., mission>vision, or is it the other way around?  Do people create deliverables, or do activities>deliverables?

The challenge: Sequence these fifteen concepts in a logical chain were each word determines the next one. We have all laughed at Dilbert's devil haired nameless boss, but can you do better? Gather your colleagues and your wits, and accept the challenge ...
